Causes of Diabetes According to Ayurveda
Ayurveda attributes the development of diabetes to various factors, including a sedentary lifestyle, improper diet, overconsumption of sweet, sour, and salty foods, lack of physical activity, stress, and genetic predisposition. A crucial aspect in Ayurveda is the concept of Agni, the digestive fire. When Agni is weakened, it disrupts the metabolism of glucose, leading to elevated blood sugar levels.
For Type II diabetes, which primarily affects adults and accounts for over 95% of diabetes cases, the primary physical causes include:
1. Excess body fat, which interferes with the hormones insulin and leptin.
2. An acidic and inflamed system that hinders the body's repair mechanisms.
3. A deficiency in essential micronutrients, impairing energy production and repair processes.
Symptoms of Diabetes According to Ayurveda
Ayurveda identifies several symptoms that signify the presence of diabetes, such as:
- Excessive thirst (polydipsia)
- Frequent urination (polyuria)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow wound healing
- Recurrent infections
Additionally, Ayurveda stresses the significance of recognizing the pre-diabetic stage, referred to as "Prameha." This stage presents symptoms like increased appetite, numbness in the extremities, and a sweet taste in the mouth.
By understanding these Ayurvedic insights into the causes and symptoms of diabetes, one can take proactive steps towards better management and prevention of the condition.
